As a patient, you will receive a personalised wristband for identification. Please wear the wristband during your entire stay. It serves our employees as an important control instrument for maximum safety.

10 safety tips

Recommendation of the “Österreichischen Plattform für Patient*innensicherheit” (Austrian Patient Safety Platform)

1. Ask questions and express concerns

It is very important that you understand your therapy, your test results and the reasons for your treatment. Ask questions until you fully understand the answers or are able to comprehend all the explanations.

2. Tell us about your habits or routine health measures

Inform the staff treating you about any medication you are taking, as well as alternative treatments, diets, dietary supplements or herbal and homeopathic remedies if you are using them. Please also let us know if you suffer from a drug allergy, a food allergy or other allergies or intolerances.

3. Take notes during your stay

Keep a diary of your experiences during your illness. It is usually helpful to write down any questions you have so that you remember to address them to the staff.

4. Four ears hear more than two

We recommend that you take a family member or a person you trust with you to a consultation with medical staff about examinations and their results or diagnoses and recommended therapies. It is an advantage if several people hear what the medical team has to say, as this reduces the risk of misunderstanding or misinterpretation.

5. You can also get support from someone you trust

If you are not able or do not feel able to have the medical consultation yourself, you are free to ask the treatment team to have this discussion with a caregiver named by you.

6. Check your personal data

Before individual examinations, procedures, therapies or medication, please check your name and date of birth with the treatment team.

7. Ask questions about the procedure for planned operations

If you have to undergo an operation, you should discuss the procedure with the surgeon beforehand. In most cases, the surgeon will mark the part of the body where the procedure is to be performed.

8. Tell us if you are in pain

It is very important that all your ailments are known – even if they are not directly related to the illness for which you are being treated.

9. Find out about your follow-up treatment before you are discharged

Ask the medical staff whether and how treatment should be continued after hospitalisation and what you should do yourself for further recovery or to maintain your health.

10. It is important that you know about your medication

Make sure that you know the names of all your medications and their effects, as well as the type and duration of their use. Keep a list and find out about possible side effects and interactions, e.g. with certain drinks or foods.

Fire protection and safety

St. Vinzenz Hospital has fire alarm systems in all buildings, with a total of 3,060 automatic fire detectors that transmit an alarm around the clock to the receptionist, the fire safety group, the control centre and the local fire department. In addition, 82 wall hydrants and 210 fire extinguishers with detailed operating instructions are installed at central locations. For maximum precaution, fire safety at Zams Hospital also includes structural measures and staff with special training.

The following points were prioritised early on in the building planning stage: Detect fires at the earliest possible stage (fire detectors) and actively combat them (staff training), suppress the fire using appropriate extinguishing techniques (extinguishing agents), thereby increasing the time window for self-rescue and rescue operations.

Two paramedics are bringing a patient to the emergency room.

Saving time means saving lives!

What to do in the event of a fire

  • Report suspicious perceptions such as the development of smoke, the smell of gas or burning to the staff on your ward immediately.
  • Keep calm in the event of a fire alarm and follow the instructions of the trained employees or the firefighting and rescue team.
  • Do not use elevators in case of fire!
  • Smoking is prohibited in all buildings: Fire doors are only effective if they are closed and remain closed in the event of a fire (this is done automatically). Wedging, tying or adjusting these doors is strictly prohibited!
