Services
General surgery and vascular surgery
The service profile covers the entire spectrum of general surgery and – with the exception of surgery on the aorta and carotid artery – vascular surgery. Focal points include:
- Laparoscopic surgery (minimally invasive)
- Oncological surgery (treatment of cancer)
Laparoscopic surgery
All established laparoscopic operations are offered, including:
- Operations on the gallbladder and appendix
- Inguinal hernia operations
- Treatments for heartburn (in the stomach and oesophagus)
- Operations on the pancreas and colon (for benign and malignant diseases)
- Bariatric surgery (for morbid obesity)
Tumor board
Treatment plans for malignant diseases are prepared in a weekly interdisciplinary tumour board together with the internal oncology department. Psycho-oncology is also integrated into the follow-up treatment. In addition, quality control is carried out through active participation in national and international studies.
Thyroid surgery
The treatment of both benign and malignant thyroid diseases is offered, with routine neuromonitoring (to visualise the vocal cord nerve) and monitoring of the parathyroid glands using the innovative PTeye system.
Surgical endoscopy
The surgical specialists at St. Vinzenz Hospital perform around 3,000 endoscopic examinations and interventions every year, both on an outpatient and inpatient basis. The most common interventions include:
- Oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopies (gastrointestinal endoscopies)
- Colonoscopies (colonoscopies)
- ERCP (gallbladder and pancreas examinations)
In addition, functional examinations of the oesophagus are carried out using manometry and 24-hour pH-metry. These examinations are used to diagnose oesophageal function and measure gastric acidity before and after interventions for heartburn or bariatric surgery. A breath test is also offered to monitor treatment after Helicobacter infections.
Academic connection
The Surgery Department at St. Vinzenz Hospital is an accredited teaching department of the Medical University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Vienna. This guarantees first-class training for future surgeons as well as continuous ongoing training and knowledge exchange.
