Pathology – the science of disease development. Pathology deals with pathological changes in cells and tissues and plays a central role in the understanding and diagnosis of diseases. The focus is on the precise analysis of tissue samples in order to identify the causes of diseases.

Institute of Clinical Pathology and Molecular Pathology

Founded in 2020, the Institute of Clinical Pathology and Molecular Pathology in Zams is a state-of-the-art facility that covers all areas of pathology – from histology and cytology to molecular pathology, microbiology and autopsy. Through the use of innovative technologies and comprehensive expertise, the institute enables precise diagnoses that form the basis for customised therapies. Close cooperation with other specialist areas ensures optimal treatment for patients.

Diagnostic procedures

The samples taken at St. Vinzenz Hospital are analysed directly in the Institute's laboratory. In addition to classical pathological and microbiological methods, the latest molecular techniques are used. A comprehensive range of testing methods, including Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), ensures that all analyses are carried out to the highest medical and technical standards to guarantee precise and reliable results.

Key role in diagnostics and therapy

Pathology plays a key role in diagnostics, therapy and follow-up. Molecular diagnostics enables precise analysis of tissue preparations, blood samples, bone marrow aspirates and pleural fluids, particularly in the case of tumour-specific changes. The genetic classification of tumors that this makes possible is a key component of personalised cancer therapies for oncologists.
