The Orthopaedic Department at St. Vinzenz Hospital and the Orthopädiezentrum Oberland orthopaedic centre in Klostergasse are headed by specialist Dr. Martin Fischer. Surgical procedures and inpatient treatment take place in the hospital, while outpatient care is provided at the Orthopädiezentrum Oberland orthopaedic centre.

Services
In an environment that offers an excellent quality of life into old age and a natural setting that encourages an active lifestyle, orthopaedic expertise often plays a crucial role in helping individuals meet their resulting expectations for movement and fitness. Our focus is on continuous, individualised care in which we respond to the special needs of our patients and offer comprehensive support.
- Information and advice: Information about the existing clinical picture and corresponding treatment options
- Joint decision-making: Developing the best possible therapy and planning the next steps
- Therapeutic measures: Implementation of both surgical and conservative treatments
- Aftercare: personal support for patients, whether on an outpatient basis or as part of inpatient rehabilitation
Interdisciplinary cooperation
Great importance is attached to interdisciplinary cooperation with other departments of the hospital. This long-standing collaboration includes in particular the interlocking cooperation with the departments of anaesthesia, internal medicine and paediatrics, physiotherapy and occupational therapy as well as the pain outpatient clinic and trauma surgery.

Long-term support and decision-making
Over the course of many years, we have supported many patients with conservative treatment approaches to alleviate symptoms. The decision for a surgical procedure is made jointly, and the planning and organisation of aftercare is also taken care of in advance.
High-quality joint replacement
Hip and knee joints are replaced to the highest standards. We exclusively use implants that have proven their effectiveness internationally and have been tested for reliability and durability according to leading prosthesis registries. Minimally invasive techniques are used for the procedure, both for initial operations and for revision operations.
Individual aftercare
After the procedure, personal care is offered to support the healing process and thus ensure optimal recovery and a high quality of life.
Joint-preserving interventions
A targeted correction of the mechanical leg axis through an osteotomy can preserve the joint for many years. The prerequisite for this is the optimal timing of the procedure. This method can save valuable time and maintain quality of life, especially for younger patients.
Depending on the initial situation, minimally invasive procedures on the hip joint also offer significant advantages. Procedures such as impingement surgery can correct a tendency to develop osteoarthritis at an early stage and thus promote joint health in the long term.
Foot surgery
Walking upright and the almost constant wearing of shoes in our culture lead to frequent and diverse foot problems. In addition to external influences, genetic predisposition can also play a role. Many foot conditions can be successfully treated with targeted footwear and conservative measures such as orthopaedic insoles.
If surgical interventions are required, we have extensive expertise in forefoot and hindfoot surgery.
Our range of services includes:
- Hallux valgus and hallux rigidus: Treatment of deformities such as bunions and accompanying claw or hammer toes
- Bunion or Digitus quintus varus: Correction of deformities in the little toe or “bunion”
- Arthrosis of the tarsus: comprehensive care for degenerative diseases of the tarsus
- Malpositions of the hindfoot: Treatment of symptomatic flat feet with tendon augmentation, transfer and corrective osteotomies
- Clubfoot and clubfoot residuals: Treatment of clubfoot and residual deformities after previous therapy
- Ankle joint surgery: Procedures on the upper and lower ankle joint to restore functionality and mobility
Hand surgery
Our range of services includes:
- Arthroscopy: minimally invasive examination and treatment for joint problems
- Arthroplasty of the thumb saddle joint: Restoring function in advanced osteoarthritis
- Treatment of Dupuytren's disease: Correction of finger flexion due to pathological shortening of the tendon sheath
- Osteoarthritis treatment: therapeutic approaches for the metacarpophalangeal, metacarpophalangeal and distal forearm joints
- Denervation of the wrist: pain-relieving measures through targeted nerve removal
- Ganglion removal: surgical removal of cysts that can occur on joints or tendon attachments
- Joint Levelling Procedures: Interventions such as ulna shortening to improve joint mechanics
- Treatment of peripheral nerve impingement syndromes: Therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome, sulcus nervi ulnaris syndrome, Loge de Guyon syndrome and other nerve compressions
- Rheumatoid arthritis: individual treatment approaches for this inflammatory joint disease
- Tendon plastics and transfers: Restoration of tendon function through plastic surgery and transfers as well as tenolysis for the treatment of tendon adhesions
- Partial or full fusion of the wrist: stabilising procedures for irreversible joint damage
Paediatric orthopaedics
Paediatric orthopaedics deals in detail with the development of the musculoskeletal system in children and adolescents. At the Zams Hospital, we exclusively offer diagnostic assessments. Surgical treatment must be carried out at the clinic in Innsbruck or by other external specialists. A key aspect in this area is educating parents about the normal growth processes and the variety of natural variations that can occur during childhood and adolescence. In addition to advisory support during these processes, targeted axial or length correction of the legs may also be necessary.
Recognition and treatment of joint problems
If children experience joint pain, prompt medical clarification is essential. While viral infections can occasionally lead to temporary and harmless joint inflammations, such as the so-called "hip flu," rare but serious occurrences, such as bacterial joint infections or a femoral head slip in the hip joint, represent an acute emergency.
Treatment of spinal curvatures
Curvatures of the spine, especially scoliosis, require regular medical check-ups. From a certain severity of scoliosis, specialised therapy may be necessary to prevent the disease from progressing and to maintain the child's quality of life.
Sonography and hip maturation disorders
Sonography of the infant hip is an important part of preventive examinations in paediatric orthopaedics. If a hip maturation disorder is diagnosed, treatment is carried out in close cooperation with the hospital's paediatrics department to ensure the best possible care for the child.
Spine
Treatment of chronic back pain
Back pain affects around 60 to 80% of the population, with around 40% suffering from chronic pain. An interdisciplinary therapy approach is particularly successful for low back pain.
We offer precise diagnostics and individual advice. The range of therapies includes a broad spectrum of conservative measures, including
- Orthopaedic technology
- Physiotherapy
- Physical medicine
- Interventional radiology
- Pain outpatient clinic
For surgical procedures on the spine, the expertise of Prim. Dr. Anton Kathrein, the medical director of the Department of Trauma Surgery and Sports Traumatology, is available.
